L.B. Malpass was born in 1876 in Ohio and traveled extensively throughout the United States and Canada as a young man. In 1904 he married and moved to Arizona where he became the manager of the Southwestern Cattle Company in Tombstone, Arizona. He began his writing career in 1908 when he began to publish articles about the American West and the cattle industry and in 1912 published his first book, The First Forty Years: Recollections of L.B
Malpass, 1876–1912. This autobiographical account of his early life is still considered one of the finest books ever written about the American West.
